It's always nice
to have some idea as to what's involved in a typical roof replacement. To help
you we have outlined in this section the process, from start to finish, of
replacing a roof.
As your homes roof
will be exposed to the elements durring installation, Burton Roofing checks each
days weather conditions to ensure that there are no pending storms forecast. And
for those unexpected isolated storms, Burton Roofing always has sufficient
temporary protection on site.
Arrive at Your Home
In most cases our roofing crew and
supervisor, depending on travel distance and traffic conditions, will arrive at
your home between 7:30 - 8:30 am. If the roofing materials were delivered the
previous day, our supervisor will immediately inspect the materials to
ensure the correct style and colour. If the materials are to be delivered that
morning our supervisor will check with the supplier to confirm
delivery before getting the crew started.
Stripping and Repairing Damage
Roof stripping will usually commence
along the back portion of the roof and move progressively forward towards the
point of disposal in our trucks. This task is performed by 3 or 4 crew
members. As the roof deck is exposed it will be inspected for water damage and
popped nails. If required the deck will be repaired and then swept clean in
preparation for installation.
roofing debris is transferred directly from the roof and into our dump truck.
For roofs requiring more than one day to finish, our crew will only strip
back an amount equal to the new roofing that can be installed on that day.
The remaining portion will be stripped the following day. This technique
minimizes the amount of exposed roof in the event of overnight rain.
Protection, Valley Protection & Vents
The first step is to apply
the specified membrane protection along the eaves and valleys. This is a rolled
product that is either self adhering or is tacked in place. As this is being
performed crew members will start loading your roof by positioning bundles of
shingles around the work area. At the same time other members will be preparing
and installing your new vents.
The first step is to
apply a starter row along the eave edge. This starter row is comprised of
shingles that have their exposed tabs removed, leaving their self sealing edge
at the eaves for added wind uplift protection. Once completed full
shingle application will commence.
cases shingle application will begin at the lower right or
left roof edge and will involve two or three crew members. Each
shingle is positioned to butt up against the adjacent shingle, it is
then fastened with 4 roofing nails in the sealing portion of the
shingle. As one row progresses another coarse will be started. Each coarse(row)
of shingles is staggered from the underlying coarse(row), this prevents
alignment of butt joints within adjacent rows.
process continues until the roof section has been fully shingled. It will then
be repeated on adjacent sloped roof areas. As each sloped area converges, either
within a valley or along a ridge, other crew members will complete the valley
protection system and install the ridge capping.
Flashing, Caulking & Trimming
new metal flashing will be installed around penetrating components such as brick
chimneys and skylights or where a roof section abutts a vertical wall.
premium sealant(caulking) will then be applied to completely seal any joints
between the flashing system and the other adjoining materials.
Finally, chalk lines will be snapped along the exposed shingle
edges and the shingles will be trimmed in a straight line.
Clean-up & Final Inspection
new roofs installation reaches it's final stage, crew members will commence with
site clean-up. They will remove any scrap materials that have fallen
onto your property and sweep the ground with a magnetic bar for any fallen
roofing nails. Porches, walkways and driveways will then be swept
our site supervisor will perform a final inspection to ensure that all elements
have been fully and properly completed. When satisfied the supervisor will then
review with you the project to ensure your complete satisfaction and to answer
any questions you may have.
